Asbestos Management Survey

What is an Asbestos Management Survey?

An Asbestos Management Survey forms part of an Asbestos Management Plan.

This survey is required to manage asbestos‑containing materials during the normal occupation and use of premises. This is to make sure that:

  • Nobody is harmed by the continuing presence of asbestos‑containing materials in the premises or equipment.
  • That the asbestos‑containing materials remain in good condition.
  • and that nobody disturbs asbestos‑containing materials accidentally (asbestos is only a problem once it’s disturbed and the fibres become airborne).

The Asbestos Management Survey will make a ‘materials assessment’, i.e. find asbestos‑containing material and record what it is, where it is and how much there is ‑ as far as is reasonably practicable. It records how accessible the asbestos‑containing material is, its condition, and any surface treatment, and records the asbestos type, by sampling or ‘presuming.’

What happens during the Survey?

The area should be vacated during the Asbestos Management Survey, as it involves minor intrusion and minor asbestos disturbance in order to make a ‘Materials Assessment.’

The dutyholder can make a Management Survey where the premises are simple and straightforward, otherwise an asbestos surveyor is needed.

How we can help

  • We will carry out an Asbestos Management Survey of your premises.
  • We will record the locations of any asbestos containing materials in a written report.
  • We will help you prepare an Asbestos Management Plan specifically for your building.
  • We will contact you to update your Asbestos Register, thus ensuring you remain compliant with current and future legislation.

  • All work with asbestos must be done by trained people using proper precautions.
  • You need to use a licensed contractor to work on high risk materials, such as pipe insulation, asbestos insulating panels or sprayed asbestos.
  • You need a trained asbestos contractor even for work on materials such as asbestos cement, textured coatings or vinyl tiles.
